ARGENTINA 1 - HOLANDA 1 (penalty stroke competition 4-3)
Field shot count: ARG 7 NED 3
Penalty corner count: ARG 2 NED 5
Argentina has won their first World Cup gold medal, joining Australia, Netherlands and Germany as the only other three countries to have earned the title of World Champions.
Argentina won in dramatic fashion, winning the penalty stroke competition 4-3 in the sudden death section of the tiebreaker.
After scoring early and having the better of the play, Argentina fell into the trap of defending their lead, rather than continuing to pressure the Dutch in attack.
With Cecilia Rognoni impenetrable in deep defence for Argentina, they rarely looked troubled by the Dutch attempts to attack at speed.
However, the Dutch earned five corners for the half, and finally scored with two minutes in the match to even the score at 1-1.
Argentina looked more dangerous in the extra time periods, however the game was forced into penalty strokes to decide the victor.
Both goalkeepers, Mariela Antoniska for Argentina and Clarinda Sinnige for Netherlands were superb during the strokes, saving eight of the first set of ten strokes.
Antoniska saved the sixteenth stroke of the competition, giving Argentina the well deserved title of World Champions.
07-12-2002 - SEMIFINALES: ARGENTINA 1 - AUSTRALIA 0
Field shot count: ARG 8 AUS 1
Penalty corner count: AUS 6 ARG 2
It was a trademark early goal from 2002 FIH Youth Player of the Year, Agustina Garcia that projected Argentina into the Gold Medal Final.
Whilst Argentina were often under pressure from the fast and penetrative Australian attack, they were rarely flustered with 2002 FIH Player of the Year Cecilia Rognoni in control in deep defence.
Lucia Aymar was also destructive in offence for Argentina, and was a handful often for Australia’s defence to dispossess her before she reached the circle.
Australia played their best hockey for the tournament, although their inability to create return for their attacking possession cost them the match.
Argentina will go into Sunday’s final as favourites, irrespective of their opponent.
Australia will need to build on their performance tonight if they are to claim the bronze medal against the loser of the China v Netherlands game.
ARGENTINA 1 - RUSIA 0 - 4-12-2002
Field shot count: ARG 12 RUS 5
Penalty corner count: ARG 8 RUS 1
A dead rubber for both teams, and the game was played as such.
Argentina took minimal risks and ran out the game at 75% pace, whilst Russia looked tired after a tough two weeks of hockey.
Both teams created opportunities to score, although it was always Argentina who looked the more polished in front of goal, and Garcia scored her seventh goal for the tournament with 16 minutes on the clock.
Field shot count: ARG 5 KOR 4
Penalty corner count: ARG 4 KOR 7
In the match of the day, Argentina has survived an impressive performance by Korea to assure themselves of top place in Pool A.
This was Korea’s first loss of the tournament.
Argentine goalkeeper Mariela Antoniska played extremely well, saving 5 of Korea’s seven penalty corners and often kept Argentina in the game.
Agustino Garcia’s goal at the 17 minute mark was one of the best of the tournament, with a hard trap, sharp drag followed by a cracking reverse stick shot from the top of the circle.
Argentina’s second goal came after a period of midfield play from both teams, and changed the game into a more attacking nature.
In the latter stages of the second half, English umpire Dawn Henning cost Korea numerous chances of scoring with some dubious decisions.
Argentina play Russia tomorrow in a game that will not affect their Pool A ranking. Korea should beat Scotland, and they will also hope that New Zealand defeats China so that they can finish second in Pool A, and progress to the semi-finals.
ARGENTINA 5 - ESCOCIA 0 (1-12-2002)
Field shot count: ARG 14 ECO 4
Penalty corner count: ARG 6 ECO 1
Argentina dominated the game from start to finish.
Whilst Scotland did their best to defend against the powerful Argentinean forward-line, they were outgunned by Argentina’s depth across the field.
Argentine coach Sergio Vigil was able to rest his senior players throughout the match after they jumped to an early 3-0 lead after ten minutes.
Argentina meets Korea and Russia in their last two matches, and seem destined to be the top placed finisher in Pool A.
Scotland play the same two teams in a different order. They will still aim for one win from their next two matches, which may elevate them into a 9 to 12 playoff position.
ARGENTINA 2 - CHINA 0 (30-11-2002)
Field shot count: ARG 11 CHN 1
Penalty corner count: ARG 3 CHN 4
Argentina has confirmed themselves as favourites to finish at the top of Pool A after a solid 2-0 defeat of recent close rivals, China.
Avenging their loss on penalty strokes in the final of the 2002 Champions Trophy, Argentina reveled in the space given to them by the Chinese midfield in the first half.
Augustina Garcia was scintillating in the first ten minutes of the match, scoring two opportunist goals within a five minute period.
China regrouped at half time, and evened up the match considerably, however they are struggling to create field goal shots against the better defences.
China now face the very real possibility that they will not make the semi-finals, sitting one point behind Korea. They play Ukraine in their next match, whilst Argentina should coast in against Scotland.
ARGENTINA 1 - ALEMANIA 0
Field shot count: ARG 15 GER 7
Penalty corner count: ARG 6 GER 1
The match of the day was an absolute cracker, with either team feeling that they could have won the match after a magnificent second half from both teams.
It was a tentative start by both Germany and Argentina in the first half, with little risks in attack and the Germans carefully marking the influential Luciana Aymar.
The second half saw a dramatic change in the game, with a more open attacking approach from both sides. Each defence was required to make magnificent goal-line saves, much to the delight of the crowd.
After withstanding a German onslaught with 10 minutes to go, Argentina finally started to dominate the game, and they finally scored with five minutes to go.
A great match with fantastic shots at goal, and easily the match of the tournament to date.
On Friday, the Germans can be expected to beat Scotland so long as they take tonight’s form into that match. Argentina face another tough match on Saturday when they meet China.
Congratulations to Nadine Ernsting-Krienke on play 250 games for Germany, and to Mercedes Margalot on her 100 games for Argentina.
ARGENTINA 5 - UCRANIA 1
|
Field shot count: ARG 14 UKR 3 Penalty corner count: ARG 7 UKR 1
Argentina were expected to dominate the match against World Cup novices Ukraine, and they did not disappoint.
Apart from one lapse at the back allowing a jubilant Ukraine to score when the score was 4-0, Argentina’s defence and midfield were rock solid.
Argentina appeared to miss the services of star striker Vanina Oneto, with a lack of fluency in many of their attacking moves as they struggle to come to terms with her absence.
Oneto has a broken hand and is unable to participate in the rest of tournament.
On Thursday, Argentina will play Germany in what will be a first class encounter. Ukraine have a tough task against an in-form Korea.

ARGENTINA 1 - N. ZELANDA 0
Field shot count: ARG 27 NZL 4
Penalty corner count: ARG 10 NZL 5
With their last two results 2-1 and 1-0 in favour of Argentina, this match was expected to be close.
This indeed was the case, but on the scoreboard only.
Argentina dominated both halves, constantly pressuring the New Zealand defence. Had it not been for the brilliance of New Zealand Captain and goalkeeper, Helen Clark, the score would have been much more to Argentina.
The hard running and strong New Zealand team occasionally pressed the Argentine defence in breakaway attacks, much to the delight of the large numbered and highly vocal New Zealand supporters.
Argentina are lamenting the possible broken hand of star striker Vanina Oneto as they prepare to face Ukraine on Tuesday. New Zealand will be expecting to win against Russia in their next match.
