HOCKEY SOBRE CESPED: LAS LEONAS GANARON CON SUMA FACILIDAD LA COPA AMERICA Un título esperado La Selección también goleó en el partido final. Fue 4 a 1 ante Estados Unidos con dos goles de Aymar, uno de Rognoni y uno de Masotta. Kingston, Jamaica. Especial.       ABRAZOS. Luciana Aymar grita el primer gol con García, Masotta y Hernández. Las Leonas levantaron la Copa América y revalidaron sus pergaminos de estar en la elite mundial del hockey sobre césped. Las chicas argentinas superaron ayer en la final a Estados Unidos por 4-1 y se adjudicaron el torneo en forma invicta. Con este resultado y estando la Selección ya clasificada para el Mundial de Australia, Alemania jugará ese torneo por su séptimo puesto en los Juegos Olímpicos. Estados Unidos, Canadá (superó a Uruguay por 6 a 0 y logró el bronce) y el propio Uruguay intervendrán en el Premundial. Argentina formó en la final con Antoniska; Burkart, Rognoni, Aicega, Margalot; Hernández, González Oliva, Aymar; Masotta, Oneto y García. El partido les fue siempre favorable a Las Leonas, que marcaron en el primer tiempo por intermedio de Rognoni a los 12 minutos y Aymar a los 24. En el segundo tiempo aumentó Masotta al minuto, descontó Gannon a los 10 y cerró la goleada Aymar a los 21.

La Selección se consagró campeona invicta de la primera edición de la Copa América, jugada en Jamaica. En la final, las argentinas (medalla de plata en los Juegos de Sydney) le ganaron a Estados Unidos por 4 a 1. Los goles fueron convertidos por Luciana Aymar (en dos oportunidades), Cecilia Rognoni y Karina Masotta (Fuchs descontó para las yanquis). Rognoni finalizó como goleadora del torneo con 14 tantos. Canadá se quedó con el bronce tras derrotar a Uruguay por 6 a 0.

THE OVERVIEW:
Argentina made this game look much easier than their previous 4-1 victory over the USA at this tournament. The South Americans came out flying and didn’t let up for the entire first half, attacking the US defence from all angles. Cecilia Rognoni was dangerous with the long ball from the back, and when the US shut this option down, Argentina went through Luciana Aymar and their midfielders. The US had trouble maintaining strong passing possession from their own end into Argentinean territory. Immediately after the interval in the 36th minute, Argentina scored their third goal – a real setback for the US. And although the USA bounced right back with a goal of their own through Kelli Gannon, they never had the sustained attack they needed to turn the game around.

THE OVERVIEW:
Argentina continued their run of dominance here, cruising to their 6th straight victory and scoring 9 more goals. Rognoni scored a couple, Aymar, Gulla, Garcia, Aicega, Doreski and Russo also contributing on the scoresheet. Mexico put in their share of hard work, but never made it into the Argentinean circle, where Antoniska had a relaxing day. The result means Argentina ends up at the top of the standings, while Mexico will play in the 5th/6th place playoff.

Las Leonas se quieren coronar

Las Leonas van por el último paso en Kingston, ya que hoy juegan la final de la 1 Copa América de hockey sobre césped en el Mona Stadium. Las argentinas, punteras e invictas en el torneo, con seis goleadas en igual cantidad de partidos, le darán revancha a Estados Unidos, que logró el pase a la final con su victoria por 3-0 ante Uruguay, que le permitió tener mejor diferencia de gol que Canadá.

Las Leonas ganaron cómodas sus partidos en la clasificación: Venezuela (14-0), Canadá (5-1), Uruguay (5-0), Estados Unidos (4-1), Jamaica (9-0) y México (9-0). Si bien el incentivo mayor era "buscar el oro y ratificar que somos las mejores de América", como sostuvo vía telefónica Vanina Oneto, una de las delanteras y goleadoras del equipo dirigido por Sergio Vigil, las chicas sólo quieren ganar. Para las estadounidenses, en cambio, derrotar a las argentinas significa tener revancha de la final de los Panamericanos de Winnipeg, del choque de la clasificación y lograr un pasaje sin escalas —si Argentina gana, Estados Unidos, Canadá y Uruguay jugarán un repechaje en Francia— para el Mundial del 2002. En ese sentido Las Leonas no tuvieron presión por la clasificación, ya que la medalla plateada de Sydney alcanzó para recorrer el camino sin más trámite.

"Puede ser que se dé más cerrado, pero si jugamos bien habrá diferencias. Con Estados Unidos nos sentimos mejor, porque es el segundo mejor equipo", dijo Oneto. El equipo formará con Antoniska o Balbiani; Burkart, Rognoni —goleadora del torneo con 13 tantos—, Aicega y Margalot; Hernández, González Oliva y Aymar; Masotta, Oneto y García.

THE OVERVIEW:
Argentina was in charge of this game from the start. Scoring first in the 4th minute, the Olympic silver-medallists cruised to their 5th win in a row. Their penalty corner unit was on fire, Rognoni hammering in a natural hattrick in the first half on the way to a 9-goal win. Jamaica showed some initiative and speed going forward, but in the end their skills and fitness were not enough to compete with the women in the blue and white shirts.

The scoreline flatters Argentina, but they deserved to win this game.

“You can see why Argentina are the Olympic silver medallists,” said USA assistant coach Nick Conway.

The USA started strongly, and had the better of the first 20 minutes, winning several corners and putting Rognoni and the Argentinean defence under pressure. In the 21st minute a US corner broke down, and Argentina’s fast counter caught the US defence off-guard. Alejandra Gulla finished a well-worked play and gave Argentina the 1-0 lead. The US appeared unsettled by this goal against the run of play, but regained their composure and the half-time score was 1-0.

In the first minute of the second period, the US again was caught napping at the back, and Argentina converted a penalty corner, Karina Masotta slotting home a rebound. But the US fought right back, Katie Kauffman’s brave play in the circle earning a penalty stroke after a clumsy tackle from the keeper. US captain Tracey Fuchs confidently scored the penalty.

The game opened up from here, end-to-end action, and US keeper Peggy Storrar made some spectacular saves from creative Argentinean attacks. Jill Reeve hit the post on a hard corner strike, but in the dying minutes Argentina made the US defence pay for lapses in concentration, and scored two late goals through Luciana Aymar and Vanina Oneto.

“We weren’t disciplined at the right times,” said Conway. “Argentina were organised all the time. Their players at the back distribute well, they rotate in the midfield to get the ball up front to Oneto. And on the breakaways they look dangerous.”

Although the US played some excellent hockey, they had trouble creating scoring chances. Argentina looked exceptional attacking the circle, and got the goals when they needed them.

Demasiada potencia de fuego de Argentina  para las Canadienses

Argentina, con 8 jugadoras del equipo que ganó la medalla de plata en Sydney, derrotó a Canadá 5-1 en el partido clasificatorio correspondiente a  la 1ra. Copa de las Américas.

Rognoni, jugando en una posición de barredora libre abrió el marcador en el min 7, a través de un corner corto y lideró el ataque argentino desde atrás con pases penetrantes. Tuvo excelentes receptoras en Vanina Oneto, Karina Masotta y Luciana Aymar, quienes les causaron problemas a la defensa canadiense durante todo el partido.

Canadá tuvo problemas para sacar la pelota de su área defensiva en gran parte del partido. Nunca encontraron su ritmo. El DT Dru Marshall ve como uno de los principales motivos de su actuación la falta de práctica internacional. "Es dificil jugar un partido como éste cuando no hemos jugado un partido internacional desde agosto". El último partido de Canadá fue en Holanda, contra Alemania.

Oneto convirtió para Argentina en el min 16, a través de un penal. Pero Canadá convirtió a través de un corto directo de Karen MacNeil en el minuto final del primer tiempo. Argentina obtuvo su 3er gol a través de un corto directo de Aicega en el min 35.

El 2do. tiempo siguió de la misma forma, aunque Canadá parecía ganar algo de confianza. Argentina aún estaba muy fuerte y convirtió 2 goles más después de brillantes corridas de Aymar y Masotta: Rognoni, nuevamente, en el min 45, a través de un corto y García  desde el borde del círculo con un brillante tiro de revés en el min 54.

Otro baile de Leonas KINGSTON, JAMAICA. Las Leonas siguen goleando en la Copa América, la primera actividad oficial tras la medalla de plata en Sydney y entrada en calor para recibir a Australia en abril. Argentina, tras el 14-0 sobre Venezuela en el debut, le ganó 5-1 a Canadá en la segunda fecha. Dos goles de Cecilia Rognoni, uno de Vanina Oneto de penal, uno de Magdalena Aicega de córner corto y uno de Soledad García de jugada marcaron la diferencia ante uno de los rivales más fuertes del torneo. Las dirigidas por Sergio Vigil enfrentarán mañana a Uruguay.

Cecilia Rognoni and Argentina’s line-up of skilful forwards spoiled Lauralee “Jumbo” Kopeck’s 150th game for Canada this evening at the Mona Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica.

Argentina, with 8 players from their Olympic silver medal squad, beat Canada 5-1 in their pool match here at the 1st Americas Cup for Women.

“Disappointed, obviously,” was Kopeck’s reaction after the game. “5-1 against isn’t a score you want any time, let alone an important game.”

Rognoni, playing in a roving sweeper position, opened the scoring in the 7th minute from a penalty corner, and led Argentina’s attack from the back with deceptive and penetrating passes. She had some excellent targets up front in Vanina Oneto, Karina Masotta and Luciana Aymar – and these three caused trouble for the Canadian defence all game.

Canada had trouble bringing the ball out of their defence for much of the game. They looked tentative at times, and never found their rhythm. Coach Dru Marshall sees Canada’s lack of recent quality game experience as one of the main factors in their performance. “It’s hard to play a game like that when we haven’t played an international match since August.” Canada’s last game was in Holland against the Dutch team that would go on to win the Olympic Bronze.

“We were too slow in transition,” said Marshall. “We gave away too many corners, and too spaced out in the midfield. Some players were too uptight – maybe a little too high for the game.”

The Canadian coach was not entirely unhappy with her team’s performance though. “It was great the way we fought back after the second goal,” said Marshall. “As the game went on, we had more confidence in our own play.”

Oneto netted for Argentina in the sixteenth minute, on a penalty stroke. But Canada came straight back down the other end, Karen MacNeil scoring with a crushing corner strike within a minute off the top of the keeper’s pads. Argentina got their third goal from Aicega on a neat penalty corner option in the 35th minute.

The second half followed a similar pattern, although Canada seemed to gain some of the confidence that Marshall talked of. Argentina was still too strong though, and scored two more after some brilliant runs from Aymar and Masotta. Rognoni scored again in the 45th minute from a penalty corner, and Garcia hammered in a brilliant reverse-stick goal from the top of the circle in the 54th minute.

Canadian goalkeeper Sarah Forbes had a busy day, and a good game. “I’m not satisfied with five goals,” she said. “But their forwards have superb skill and they can shoot from anywhere – that’s exactly what I got. We gave away too many corners – we have some stuff to sort out at the back.”

The Canadian team was disappointed after the game, but presented Kopeck with two framed photos of her playing. Kopeck had a good game personally, saving three penalty corner strikes on the line.

Canada plays Venezuela tomorrow at 5:00pm and will be looking to build confidence by scoring some goals.

Argentina now sits comfortably atop the standings with six points and 19 goals from two games.
