A MUCH more spirited and greatly improved performance gave Great Britain's women the upper hand in Glasgow yesterday. But they lacked a player who could hit the ball into the roof of the net at short corners.
The game ended as it began, scoreless, but that inadequate statistic masks a much more accomplished display.
In the 18th minute, Purdy Miller was able to get two shots at goal within the space of a minute: one went just over the bar, the other hit the left post. The second half became a procession of short corners for Britain, 13 in all. In every case the Argentina goalkeeper Paola Vucojicic spreadeagled herself on the ground across the goalmouth and killed the ball.
On Sunday and Monday against world champions Australia, Great Britain will be tested even further.

Argentina, ranked fourth in the world, made light of the cold, wet conditions when they beat Great Britain for the first time in four years with a comfortable 4-1 victory in Glasgow yesterday. The teams meet again tonight. Vanina Oneto gave Argentina an early lead, before the hosts levelled in the 25th minute when Fiona Greenham scored from a penalty corner. But a penalty-corner goal within a minute by Magdalena Aicega, the captain, set Argentina on the road to victory.
Great Britain 1 Argentina 4
ARGENTINA'S Soledad Garcia scored two magnificent goals last night as the South Americans outclassed Great Britain in the first of four women's Tests being staged in Glasgow.
Great Britain, with Scotland's Pauline Stott as vice-captain, created much of the early pressure, and it was against the run of play that the first goal was scored.
Argentine defender Ayelin Stepnik launched an awesome through drive across the pitch from her 22-yard line and found Garcia at the diagonally opposite end. She dribbled quickly into the circle, locked sticks with Melanie Clewlow at the left post, then pulled the ball away and reverse flicked it neatly into the net.
Shortly after, Garcia had a wonderful jigging solo run into the circle on the right, which was rewarded with a penalty corner. But a corner for Great Britain two minutes later rebounded off the keeper and fell to Fiona Greenham who lifted it neatly into the left corner of the goal off an opponent's stick.
Argentina immediately struck back to make it 2-1 when Magdalena Aicega blasted into the net off a deflection by Greenham.
After half-time, Argentina continued to dominate, and Garcia, taking the ball into the circle along the goal line, scored the best goal of the match from a snap shot at a narrow angle on the right.
After a splendid triple save by goalkeeper Hilary Rose, Argentina extended their lead with another hard shot from the top of the circle, this time by Paola Vucojicic.
The two countries play again this afternoon at 1pm.
