1999 FIH Player of the Year Awards in final voting stage

As the top nations in world hockey are preparing to compete in the Champions Trophy in the Netherlands, preparations for the 1999 International Player of the Year Awards have now reached the final stages.

Last year's winners, Dutchman Stephan Veen and Australia's Alyson Annan have been nominated again. There are of course a host of other nominations, 17 women and 15 men in all. These nominations were made by various National Associations around the world and by hockey journalists who keep track of what's going on in the hockey world.

At this stage, the nominations have been forwarded to a Selection Panel for the final voting. The Panel is composed of representatives of International Coaches, Umpires, Journalists, and Athletes. The Selection Panel will be taking into account various player qualities such as their technique and skill, the commitment they have to the game, their discipline, the influence they have on the team performance and of course, their personality.

Steve Jaspan, the Selection Panel Chairman commented, "it is extremely difficult to choose between all these quality players. The reputation of most players is second to none and there is only a fine line to distinguish between their performance in 1999"? "I really look forward to the awards presentation at the Champions Trophy". The awards will be announced on Thursday 1st June 2000 at Wagener Stadium in Amstelveen in the Netherlands at 6.30pm.

Selection Panel Members:

Chairman: Steve Jaspan (SAF) Umpires: Christian Siebrecht (GER), Marelize de Klerk (SAF) Coaches: Maggie Souyave (ENG), Toni Forellat (SPA) Journalists: Claire Middleton (ENG), S. Thyagarayan (IND), Athletes' Panel: Liane Tooth (AUS), Carsten Fischer (GER)

FIH Media Release

JAY STACY AND NATASCHA KELLER ARE
FIH PLAYER OF THE YEAR 1999

Wagener Stadium, 1st June 2000

The International Hockey Federation today announced the winners of the 1999 International Player of the Year Award. Jay Stacy of Australia and German Natascha Keller were presented with the winning trophies by FIH President Juan Angel Calzado at the Champions Trophy being held in the Netherlands.

For 22 year old Keller this award really capped her 1999 performance. It may not compensate for her disappointment in losing the final of the European Championship in her home country last year, but it shows her enormous contribution to the team as she pipped other world stars such as Alysson Anan, Dillian van den Boogaard and Carole Thate to claim the award.
An outstanding skilful striker, she is also modest and was very surprised to even be nominated. She was selected Player of the Tournament in the Champions Trophy in Brisbane in 1999.

Natascha comes from a family with exceptional Olympic tradition. Her grandfather, father and brother were all Olympic medallists, just as she was in Atlanta in 1996.

No doubt she will be expecting to continue with that tradition in the forthcoming Sydney Games.

Jay Stacy, 31, had an exceptional year in 1999. His penalty corner strike must be one of the hardest in men’s hockey today and has been a match winner for the Kookaburras on many an occasion, especially in the 1999 Champions Trophy where he went on to win Gold. As vice captain of the Australian side, he has displayed excellent leadership qualities on the field.
He is also a great ambassador for the game, being a role model for many young hockey players. Only recently, he accumulated his 300th international cap and is Australia’s most capped player.

His commitment will ensure that he will continue to play a major role in Australia’s side as they now work towards Olympic Gold.

The FIH Players of the Year were selected after a selection panel, made up of umpires, coaches, journalists and Athletes’ Panel members voted for nominations received from various journalists and National Hockey Associations. Voting was based on various criteria such as leadership qualities, contribution to development, technique and skill, influence on team performance and personality.

"Both Natascha and Jay have set such high standards that the FIH is only too pleased to give due recognition to the athletes’ outstanding achievements" said Calzado in announcing the awards.

NETHERLANDS
Tom van ‘t Hek (coach):
"I am very happy that we have won the Champions Trophy. I have been reading some fairy tales in the Dutch papers so I just want to say that I know that there is an Olympic Games later this year. Have a good summer. Thank you very much."

GERMANY
Berti Rauth (coach):
"I am very disappointed. We played with heart. We struck back well from 0-2. Nadine Ernsting-Krienke is one of the best players in the world."
"When you see the last decision, you have to say that we were unlucky. The umpires need to learn from video. I am very proud of the team."

Australia 65 Jenny Morris 1-0

AUSTRALIA
Richard Charlesworth (coach):
"I think the girls would agree it was a struggle. Argentina are a quality team. They were tougher in the Olympics, I think the struggle did us good."
"We have to be able to play without certain players. Alyson would probably have sat it out in the stand even if we were in the final."

Lisa Carruthers:
"There is nothing specific that we did wrong. It was hard not to be playing in the main game. It will be hard to watch the final but I am going to try to enjoy it."
"We are always at full strength."

Richard Charlesworth:
"Sometimes what happens on the pitch isn’t what the coach ordains."

Rechell Hawkens:
"We must look at the bigger picture and see what we can do to improve before the end of the year."

Richard Charlesworth:
"Not once did our girls go out on the pitch not wanting to win. The rules have made defending easier and so you have to take more risks."

ARGENTINA
Sergio Vigil (coach):
"I am happy with how we played in the tournament. If Australia did not play their best it is because of what we did to stop them."
"In Argentina there are many players who are not known to you who have the chance to go to Sydney."
"Between now and Sydney we will be training in Buenos Aires. We want to play matches against men. In New Zealand we will play 3 matches before the Games."

New Zealand - South Africa 0 - 2 (0-1)

Team Minute Player Score
South Africa 35 Pietie Coetzee 0-1
South Africa 49 Karen Symons 0-2

SOUTH AFRICA
Gene Muller (coach):
"We set goals at the beginning of the year. To end 5th here was one of them. New Zealand are traditionally the toughest team we play. They play under the same constraints that we do and with the same ethics."
"Pietie Coetzee took a half chance with just 2 seconds on the clock."
"Generally I’m very pleased. We have only last one of our last 4 matches and this is our first champions trophy."
"The most important thing is experiencing the intensity of competition."

Karen Roberts (captain):
"We have been exposed to the mental pressure. It has been tough but it has exposed the strengths of the team. We have proved we can pull together when it’s tough. We have a lot to do before Sydney."

Lindsey Carlisle:
"The injury has been a thorn in my backside."
" Todays game was a nice way to mark my 100 caps."

NEW ZEALAND:
Jan Borren (coach):
"South Africa have played well today. It’s been a tough tournament with the elements against us. We need to keep the results in perspective. We would like to congratulate South Africa but our focus is on Sydney."

Anna Lawrence (captain):
"I have been asked to play again in the Netherlands. I will make no decisions after until after Sydney. It’s always great playing in Holland. I guess it is more fun if you win! There is pressure and close results make it more tiring. We’ve learnt a lot from here."

Jan Borren :
"It’s a pity that you have to play 8 matches in 13 days in the Olympics. It’s ok for the spectators and the media but not for the players. The desire for more women’s matches is fine but I’m critical of the decision."

Press Conference Sound-Bites

SOUTH AFRICA
Gene Muller (coach):
"We were dominated today and they were typical Australia."
"The importance is how we learn the lessons. The next game is most important for us."
"We were flat today and would have still been flat if we were still in it."
"I think that playing every nation ranked above us is tough. This is a foundation for the future and I see this as part of our education."
"We set out to finish 5th and we are still on track."

Karen Roberts (captain):
"We know we had New Sealand to play and that was in the back of our mind."
"We have had a cruel lesson which will strengthen us for saturday. That will be our fiat."

AUSTRALIA
Richard Charlesworth (Doctor):
"Perhaps the score flattered us. I was happier with the second half, but we have a lot of work to do. It has been a solutorian lesson."
"Our corner conversion has got to improve and our finishing has been poor. We need to toughen up – we’re pushed of the ball and get no protection."
"We try not to push and shove in training – but we might have to start."
"We need to become more hardnosed – if knocking the ball over the baseline isn’t a corner, than we will do it to. You often get in to trouble trying to keep it in."
"We are no longer favourite."
"The players are much experienced chastened by this experience."
"We did a great thing for hockey in the past decade. We lifted the bar – now our job is to go forward."

"The game flowed. It was an enjoyable game to play in and it was just a shame that more people weren’t there to see it. We are disappointed not to win."
"I was pleased to get a goal to mark the occasion."

Jan Borren (coach):
"Holland and Australia play a close game putting pressure on the ball. There’s normally more space against Germany. They allow us more space in the mid-field. We are better against this style of play and you end up with a more attractive game."
"The game against Japan in Milton Keynes was an aberration."
"Our defence today was more composed. I was happy with them- they weren’t perfect!"
"We have got a series in Sydney with Germany and Australia and we entertain Argentina immediately before the Games."

GERMANY
Berti Rauth (coach):
"It was a good game- a hard game but not rough. It was a pity that more weren’t there to see it."
"Natascha Keller is becoming more creative."
"I’m not sad about the draw. We have 10 points and we will wait and see what Holland and Australia can do."
"We are not yet playing our best hockey- we must learn to defend against the tip-in."

THE NETHERLANDS
Tom van 't Hek (coach):
"One of the poorest performances by a Dutch team ever."
"We were lucky to loose by only one goal. We are concluding that we are not able to play at the expexted level. We will work hard on the team and on ourselves."
"There is a long way to go but we can't hide the problems any more. Argentina were a better team than us tonight."
"Mentally some of the girls are not yet ready."
"Well, some rocks are fallen into the water and now we will have to pore them out so we can go sailing in a straight line again."

ARGENTINA
Sergio Vigil (coach):
"After yesterday I said I believed in the team. Today we grew. I'm very happy and will continue to believe in the team on and off the team."
"Today Magdalena has won here 100th cap for Argentina."
"It was a great match, probably not our finest but we found what we were looking for."

AUSTRALIA
Robert Haigh (coach):
"We played well in the first half but we didn’t take our chances."
"We gave them 3 corner chances and they took 2 of them. In the context of what I have been saying over the past few days that is not good enough."
"Everybody will get a rest in this tournament."
"If you want to win you have to risk losing."

GERMANY
Berti Rauth (coach):
"For the first ten minutes we were not on the pitch."
"After a while we played in a more relaxed style and became more creative."
"Sometimes Australia are too stereotyped."
"I don’t think that we are the rough team. We are not the aggressors against the poor Australian team. It is not like Ric says – I can show the video evidence."

Buenos Aires, 27 May.

NEW ZEALAND
Jan Borren (coach):
"We were too slow to loose the ball in the first half. We were a bit better in the second period. More composure. We were disappointed about the last goal. 1-3 is better than 1-4. Hockey in New Zealand is an amateur sport. People have families and have to work."

AUSTRALIA
Ric Charlesworth (coach):
"Satisfied with the result but not how we played. I expect more. New Zealand hurt us more today than Great Britain did in Glasgow. The difference was that Great Britain converted their corners. If New Zealand had done the same we would have lost. Hockey is becoming a game of defending the circle. A 3/1 points system is crazy. Too much reward for defensive play. 2/1 is much better."
